The Scatter takes one ship in twenty. He climbed aboard anyway.
Seven-year-old Theriot Dace has nothing left. His parents are gone. His big brother Cass is somewhere beyond the sky. His little sister Sia is waiting for him in the Sinks, the quarry slum below Port Ashgrove's launch yards, where the rocket dust never settles.
So Theriot does the only thing he can think of. He stows away on the Wayward Gleaner, a battered salvage hauler bound for the Scatter: a belt of wreckage from a war ninety years gone, and the deadliest job in the system.
When the crew finds him, starving and in rags, they don't send him back. They go and get his sister.
Now Theriot and Sia have a ship, a captain, and a crew who will teach them to fly. But the Scatter is still hiding things, and the brass token their father left behind is stamped with a sign from the old war.
Book One of the Children of the Scatter series.
